Finzi/Vaughan Williams concert with PCU in Portsmouth (November): 27 choir members joined 80 Portsmouth Choral Union singers for this fantastic concert with large forces – we were accompanied by over 50 musicians from the Southern Pro Musica orchestra. Finzi’s Intimations of Immortality was tricky to learn but came together in the last few rehearsals and everyone seemed to fall in love with it. It was a privilege to sing with our soloist, James Gilchrist. Vaughan Williams’ lovely Toward the Unknown Region was much easier to learn and was a great start to the evening. Pavlos Carvalho gave a wonderful interpretation of Elgar’s Cello Concerto. It was a splendid evening, made possible by an extremely generous donation by a PCU choir member.
Messiah Concert (December): What an evening! Our young soloists did us proud, the Brandenburg team were on sparkling form and we felt there was a real buzz about our singing. Everyone we have spoken to, from audience members to fellow choir members, thought it was a wonderful occasion. We had a good turnout too: 335 tickets sold - maybe the brief mention we managed to secure on BBC Radio 3's In Tune programme had something to do with that...
Haydn and Bach Concert (March): Everyone enjoyed Haydn’s Nelson Mass and David’s arrangement of various Bach cantatas to fit the Easter story was a challenging but wonderful sing, with fine soloists (Danni O’Neill and Geoff Williams) and some virtuoso solo performances from the orchestra – the (piccolo?) trumpet accompaniment in the final chorus brought the house down. Opera Gala (June): Choir, soloists and audience braved one of the hottest nights of the year for our Opera Gala. We triumphed over the temperatures and provided a wonderful evening of favourite choruses and the much-loved West Side Story choral suite. In the “What a Surprise” waltz from Eugene Onegin everyone, including most of the choir, was surprised and delighted that we had not just music but actual dancing, from Vanessa, one of our sopranos - you can see her in action here.
